Safety Map Piques Flanders Interest

Trefdag Digitaal Vlaanderen is an annual event that brings together thousands of innovation enthusiasts from across Flanders to discuss the latest ICT developments in the region. The PoliVisu partner AIV, who is also the main organiser, used the opportunity to share its experience with the project. Given the priority attached to traffic safety, AIV emphasised the impact PoliVisu tools have had on regional transport policy making.

For those new to the subject, the Flemish traffic safety programme rests on five key pillars

  • Pillar 1: Information and training for safer travel behaviour

  • Pillar 2: Traffic-safe design and use of traffic-safe technologies

  • Pillar 3: Enforcement and regulations to ensure a sufficiently effective road safety policy

  • Pillar 4: Continuous monitoring and evaluation

  • Pillar 5: Stakeholder engagement to promote behavioural change

The PoliVisu solution for Flanders includes an interactive map showing 138,558 accidents that happened in the region between January 2014 and September 2019. Users can discover accident hotspots by experimenting with data selection e.g. they can apply filters to view accidents during morning rush hours near schools.

The traffic accident map is used by policy makers to define the list of dangerous places and road segments. It is also one of the instruments used to determine priority areas for new trajectory controls to be installed along the Flemish main roads in the near future.

Going back to the five pillars, the Flanders accident map contributes to Pillar 2 (improving safety around dangerous places, road segments and blind corners), Pillar 3 (ANPR and trajectory speed control) and Pillar 4 (policy-relevant research, evaluation and monitoring).
